The Birth of Jesus Christ
This piece is the first of a three piece series entitled "The Birth, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ" Each piece was created using a process that involved masking, raku glazes, and a special raku firing technique finished with a reduction atmosphere. The copper and white colored glazes provide a striking contrast to the black silhouette of the three wise men depicted in the Gospel of Matthew bringing their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.Gold symbolizes Jesus as King. Frankincense symbolizes Jesus as high priest. Myrrh symbolizes Jesus Death. The perfect Lamb of God, he was to be slain for the sins of the world as our atoning sacrifice.
